Weather Changes Have an Affect on my Mood

Weather Changes Have an Affect on my Mood

Want to know something strange about me?

The weather directly impacts my mood.

Maybe you can picture this? It’s Monday morning, and my iPhone alarm blares at 6 am signaling the start of another work week. I wake up with anxiety and have to take deep breaths to lower my heart rate. As I begin to feel calm, I turn to look out my bedroom window and peek up at the sky to check the weather. There is a sea of grey, and the clouds are moving quickly with chilly winds. I take a deep breath of the fresh air and smell the coming of rain.

You know that crisp smell right before it’s about to rain? Some might say that smell is comforting, well to me it’s not. The rain, grey, and chill lead me to overthink and I begin to worry about things out of my control. It’s quite odd, but for me, it’s a pattern.

If the story were different and the sun was shining, I would be in better spirits. The sun's shine and warmth fuel me to be extremely productive. As fall is in full swing and we are heading towards winter, I've noticed my seasonal depression kicks in. The darkness when I wake up in the morning makes it troublesome to fight the urge to sleep until the last possible minute I can leave to make it work on time.

So between a lack of daylight, rainy/snowy gloom, and bone-chilling weather, how do you muster the motivation to kick the day’s butt?

To be transparent, I don’t have the answer! We should continue to work towards this common goal - to be our best selves. That means continuously learning, growing, and challenging yourself. Moral of the story - The weather shouldn’t hinder any of this!

Instead here are 3 things to remember if the day brings bad weather.

1. The sun will come out tomorrow… or the next day, but make sure when the sun is shining that you make a point to bask in the sunshine. I guarantee you will feel a wave of happiness overcome you.

2. Think of something that you have accomplished in the past and let that fuel you to accomplish something today.

3. Finally, smile when you wake up no matter what because you are here on this earth to live another day so take advantage of it!
